Behind the Project

What’s the Story Behind the Photogrammetry Project?

The Curator of the Police Museum, Ms Kara Roopsingh, was trained in 3D technology in 2014 by the University of Florida, and specifically in photogrammetry in 2025 with the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago and CyArk. These experiences inspired her to bring it to the museum sector.

In her efforts to enhance preservation of the museum collection, improve visitor experience and outreach, she reached out to the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago to partner on this project. The NTTT provided the technical expertise and equipment for the completion of these 3D digital models.

The project focused on two phases of work that will result in Police artefacts being preserved digitally in 3D for generations to come. Phase 1 of the project lasted from January to May 2026 and focused on two historic cannons located at the Commissioner’s Residence, one Police Steel Helmet, and one Wicker Riot Shield in the Police Museum collection. Phase 2, scheduled tentatively for November 2026, will focus on a historic baton and a mannequin dressed in full riot gear of the 1960s.

What is photogrammetry?

Photogrammetry is the process of layering and overlapping individual images to construct virtual representations of three-dimensional objects. It can act as a mode of preservation where objects can be studied and “handled” without risk of damage. The purpose in this case is to create 3D models for the website and outreach of the Police Museum.
