Minimum Use of Force
A progressive approach to confronting citizens, aimed at reducing fatalities.
As part of the transformation and modernization process now being undertaken at the Police Service, the TTPS has revamped its Use of Force policy to include the use of non-lethal weapons as part of a progressive process when confronting citizens. The effective use of these tools, supplemented by body-worn cameras, is intended to reduce fatalities between the police and citizens who, for whatever reason, may end up in a confrontational posture with the police.
Tools of a Progressive Response
The TTPS has rolled out the following as part of its arsenal.
Taser Guns
A non-lethal option that allows officers to subdue a subject without resorting to lethal force.
Pepper Spray
An inflammatory agent used as a non-lethal means of de-escalating a confrontation.
Body-Worn Cameras
Recording encounters to support accountability and transparency in every interaction.
